Portfolio Refinement — Selection & Artistic Direction

Once your artistic direction has been identified, the work shifts from exploration to construction. 

This session is dedicated to selection and decision-making—establishing what constitutes your work, and what does not. 

A strong portfolio is not a collection of everything you have produced. 
It is a precise and intentional selection that communicates a clear artistic position. 

Through a rigorous review process, we begin shaping your existing material into a coherent body of work that can be understood, presented, and evaluated in professional contexts (art schools, residencies, galleries, competitions). 

This session marks the beginning of your artist dossier construction.

What We’ll Move Through Together

We conduct a detailed review of your existing works (physical or digital), with a focus on clarity, consistency, and relevance. 

You will be guided through a structured selection process: 

  • identifying your strongest works based on visual impact and coherence 
  • distinguishing resolved works from studies, experiments, or unfinished pieces 
  • separating relevant material from distracting or inconsistent work 

We begin organizing your work into a first professional structure: 

  • grouping works into coherent series or directions 
  • identifying potential axes of development 
  • removing or archiving works that weaken the overall clarity 

We introduce the foundations of a professional artist portfolio: 

  • defining a clear selection logic 
  • establishing visual consistency across works 
  • initiating a readable and intentional sequencing 

You Will Leave With

  • a curated selection of key artworks forming the foundation of your portfolio 
  • a clear distinction between strong, relevant works and secondary material 
  • a refined body of work aligned with your artistic direction 
  • a first structured outline of your portfolio / artist book (digital format) 
  • an understanding of how your work will be read by schools, juries, curators, and galleries 
  • a concrete starting point for building your artist dossier (portfolio, statement, bio, CV)

Post-Session Integration — Session 4

Pause. Step back. Look again. 

You now have a first structured draft of your portfolio or artist book. 
This is not the final form—it is a working structure. 

Take time to review it with distance. 

Ask yourself: 

  • What feels clear, and what still feels unresolved? 
  • Which works hold strength—and which weaken the whole? 
  • Is your artistic direction readable to someone outside your practice? 
  • What is missing for your work to be fully understood in a professional context? 

Look at your portfolio as if you were: 

  • a jury member in an art school 
  • a curator reviewing submissions 
  • a gallery assessing coherence and potential 

Be precise. Be honest. 

Before Session 5 

Return to your work space and begin refining: 

  • adjust your selection if needed 
  • note gaps, inconsistencies, or excess 
  • write down questions, doubts, or intuitions 
  • identify what needs to be clarified, rewritten, or strengthened 

Bring: 

  • your updated portfolio draft 
  • your notes and questions 
  • your willingness to refine further 

This phase is not about producing more. 
It is about seeing better, deciding better, and building with intention. 

Session 5 will take this material and transform it into a coherent, professional artist dossier.
